Bjorinn 4, SA Vikingur 3

What follows is a translation of the description of our first game of the season from the IHI.is website. I especially enjoy how penalty minutes translate as 'criminal minutes'.

Bjorinn = bears, Vikingur = Vikings.

The first game of the Icelandic championship in men's hockey was held in Akureyri on Saturday. Vikings from Akureyri took against Bjorn from Reykjavik and ended the game with a win over visitors from the bear that did 4 goals against 3 local level.

Before the first round of the game was in the middle had teams scored all the goals coming in the batch. Bjorn's men rode into action when they took advantage of personnel on the ice, with two goals but it was Matthias S. Sigurdsson, who made the first goal of the tournament this time. Assists were Oli Thor Gunnarsson and Sergei Zak. The goal came in just over seven minutes had elapsed from the batch.

Less than two minutes later had Steindór Ingason added a goal for the men and Bjorn again, it was Sergei Zak who had an assist.
Adam was not long in paradise by Andri Freyr Sverrisson reduced the difference for the Vikings Stop delivery was Josh Gribben. Position of a -2 Bjorn men in favor of the first round.

A Relaxing Sunday.

Josh bakes. Quite often, actually.

Here, he presents approximately 70 cookies. I insisted upon this photo after he mentioned he doesn't own a camera, and hasn't taken a picture the entire three years he's been here. Crazy!

I went to the pool today. This pool is one of eleven (11!) pools in the same complex. This one is usually empty, because it's for actual swimming. The news of the day is discussed in the communal hot-tub (not pictured).

A neat car I found walking home.

The best part of the Akureyri pool: the two firefighter hoses of water that shoot out of the blue wall. This is blissful water therapy. So hot, and so nice. At 450 kr. ($4), going to the pool to read is pretty much an ideal day in Iceland.

I am eating a piece of Hardfiskur here, and liking it.

This is Steinur.

Steinur is #9 on the SA Vikingur, and plays on the right-wing of the second line. Josh's take: "Steinur's been a good player for a lot of years".

Steinur is at the dressing room stall next to mine, and is a friendly chap. He's a funny dude in a very Icelandic way, which I shall contemplate further.

The clock on the wall as we leave Steinur's apartment to go out. We left 'early, to get a seat'. Right.

There were no seats to be had at this, or any of the establishments we attended last evening.

When I set it up, I didn't expect this blog to feature a picture of Pavorotti. Go figure.

My favourite thing about this girl is her necklace--the shape of what is clearly her homeland.

There was a piano bar.

I would have liked to have stayed here longer.

We ran into Runar at approximately 3:30am.

This is the only other guy I've seen with a mustache. Singing at the piano bar.

I just shaved mine off after a bad practice. Sure enough, a day later, guys are asking why I did it, yet hadn't said a bloody thing before.

Being a small place, young people wind up in the same bars as older social people.

In showing these pics to Ingvar, our captain (and the captain of the national team), he said "those are all my students", as he teaches math during the day.

Gunnar, the guy with long hair, also lost a bet with Josh wherein Gunnar pledged his car.

Josh has not attempted to collect on this bet, but the kid has stayed away from the rink all year, afraid Josh will do so.

All in all, a solid night out.

Martin Solveig & Dragonette - Hello --Music from the SA Vikingur Dressing Room

Raining in 'Reyri.

Today was a rainy day...but still quite captivating to get out and walk around.

I hit the library. It was as most trips to the library are: informative.

On the way home, I stopped off at a grocery store, and bought quite a few groceries. Probably my most interesting purchase was 'hardfiskur'. This is like potato-chips for Icelanders. In fact, the kid next to me on the plane here told me this was his favourite Icelandic food.

At eight bucks, I am hoping it's tasty. And filling.

Interestingly, the only Canadian beer I've seen here is Moosehead. Hmm.

They also sell 'Duff' beer. Go figure. I'd not seen this on my previous trips.

Take on me (music video) - Runar Eff ft. Erna

Runar is on my hockey team...we are hitting the bars of Akureyri this weekend. He also hosts a morning show on FM 98.7 here from 9am-noon. Pretty dynamic fellow. At the local Eyemundsson, his CD was next to those of Sigur Ros. Pretty neat.
